POSITION: CAC HOCKEY PROGRAM DIRECTOR

REPORTS TO: CAC EXECUTIVE BOARD

1) Request for Proposal:

The Canadian Athletic Club (CAC) is seeking proposals from individuals for the position of  “Hockey Program Director”. Applicants must provide proposals complete with resumes outlining education, qualifications, and current certification as related to Sport management, Athlete and Coach Development, current Hockey Canada requirements, CHSP, Speak Out, Coach Level. Proposals should include an expected compensation package and a statement of his / her vision, philosophy and expectations of CAC’s Hockey program. Presently this position is part-time but could conceivably develop into a full time position. CAC presently operates youth hockey programs from August to March.

The Canadian Athletic Club is a non-profit sport group lead by a nine person volunteer board and operated by volunteer effort. The Clubs main functions are to operate an ELITE hockey program in Northwest Edmonton at the Bantam and Midget divisions. CAC also owns and operates a single sheet ice arena

The CAC program has been a constant in the City of Edmonton for over 67 years and has seen 1,000’s of players participate in CAC administered programs and has observed a number of former CAC players playing at the major junior, college/university, and professional (NHL) levels.

The CAC is unique in the City of Edmonton as it not only administers a successful youth hockey program but owns and operates it’s own indoor ice facility.  The primary intent of this ice facility is to service the practice requirements of CAC team’s; as well the ice and facility are rented out to other community groups through the year.

The CAC youth hockey program is open to all youth residing in a predefined area of the City of Edmonton based on Edmonton Minor Hockey determined boundaries. CAC boundaries include the Northwest Zone of Edmonton; feeder organizations include the Hawks Athletic Club, Whitemud West Hockey Association and the Northwest District program.   Entrance into the program is dependent on skill level, as the program does have “Competitive” and “Elite” stream intent. The CAC directly administers seven youth hockey teams. The Competitive stream consists of Two Bantam AA, One Midget 15 AA, and one Midget AA team. The Elite Stream consists of one Midget Major AAA, one Midget Minor AAA (15 yr old only) and one Bantam AAA team. All Elite teams play in a provincial league.

2) Position Overview and Objectives:

The Director of Hockey Operations is responsible for the overall hockey operations of the Canadian Athletic Club, assuming responsibility for ensuring compliance with policies and procedures of the Canadian Athletic Club, Edmonton Minor Hockey Association, Hockey Alberta and Hockey Canada.    

This position is responsible to the Executive of the Canadian Athletic Club, prepares and manages the budget for the Hockey program, the Canadian Athletic Club Hockey School, all developmental programs, safety programs, and clinics. Is expected to work collaboratively with individuals and programs associated with CAC.

The position requires building of collaborative and productive relationships with CAC stakeholders (Whitemud West, Hawks, NWZ, Hockey Albert High Performance program). Will communicate with stakeholders to identify the changing needs and conditions of the athlete and coach development within the associations served by CAC.
 
It is a requirement for the Director of Hockey Operations to create and operate the CAC Hockey Program and to ensure that players and coaches enrolled receive a competitive and high performance hockey development program. This position would work closely with Hockey Alberta high performance programs (i.e. Alberta Cup).

3) Responsibilities:

- This individual reports to the Canadian Athletic Club Executive.
- Under direction of the Executive, will manage day-to-day hockey activities
- Responsible for overall hockey operations ensuring compliance with CAC, EMHA, Hockey Alberta and Hockey Canada constitutions and bylaws.
- Directs implementation of CAC policies. Sets specific development programs and service goals that work towards the CAC Vision and Mission statement.
- Meet as required with members of the coaching staff, mentors, category directors, and CAC Executive as often as necessary to ensure the success of the CAC Hockey program.
- Is responsible to recruit and appoint Category Directors for each team. Support and encourage initiatives.
- Observe and evaluate all coaches and directors ongoing performances and provide regular and appropriate feedback.
- Plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate player and coach developmental programs that are consistent with Hockey Alberta and Hockey Canada guidelines and review annually.
- Investigate and evaluate in broad based terms, the potential assets and liabilities of a project, proposal, or strategy – i.e. Hockey Academies, School Programs, conditioning camps, spring and summer development program’s, 3 on 3 hockey, etc.
- Encourage team building by facilitating open communications and positive working relationships with the CAC Executive, directors, teams and volunteers.
- Responsible for the administration, operation and delivery of an affordable Hockey School, presently operating as the CAC Hockey School in the month of August for all age and skill levels.
- Responsible for the recruitment, selection of qualified / certified coaches. Set clear, results-oriented goals, with realistic and measurable outcomes.
- Supports goal achievement. Monitors performances. Assists Players, Coaching staff and directors in developing the necessary skills to be successful within the organization.
- Obtain approval of Executive of all coach & director selections.
- Manage a volunteer recruitment plan and participate on the CAC Golf Tournament Committee.
- Responsible to set and oversee player tryouts, draft procedures and ensure that player releases are completed in accordance with applicable league rules
- Shall establish a Player Handbook that will outline Club history, Operating procedures, rules, and acceptable codes of conduct, and ensure that it is reviewed annually.
- Promote community awareness of the organizations vision, mission and development goals and strategies.
- Shall represent and / or ensure representation to meetings of AA Council, various league meetings, Hockey Alberta AGM or if necessary EMHA.
- Ensure that all players, parents, coaches, officials and volunteers are treated with dignity and respect
- Facilitates a communication plan that informs the directors and volunteers within the program of the activities and direction of the Hockey Program.
- Build strong working relationships with others both inside and outside the organization and enlist their support for accomplishing tasks.
- Act as an advocate of the organization and its programs with the Association and the community.
