SHORTHANDED U22S TOP GERMANY IN EXHIBITION
SCHWENNINGEN, Germany – Emmanuelle Blais (Montreal, Que./University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) and
Carolyne Prevost (Sarnia, Ont./University of Wisconsin, WCHA) had two assists apiece and five different
players scored goals as Canada’s National Women’s Team topped Germany 5-1 in a pre-MLP Cup game on
Monday.
Despite icing only eight forwards – some players did not arrive in Germany until after the game had begun
– Canada outshot the Germans 57-10, including 22-0 in the third period. Defenceman Laura Fortino (Hamilton,
Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) was moved up to forward to give the Canadians three full lines.
Fortino made a quick impression as a forward, opening the scoring just three minutes after the opening
face-off. Although the Germans tied the game shortly after, Annie Guay (Rouyn-Noranda, Que./Montreal, CWHL)
jumped up into the rush and made it 2-1, and Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./National Women’s Team)
pushed the lead to 3-1 before the end of the period.
Ann-Sophie Bettez (Sept-Iles, Que./McGill University, CIS) set up Catherine White (Brampton, Ont./Cornell
University, ECAC) for the lone goal of the second period, one in which the Canadians spent much of the final
10 minutes in the penalty box.
The Canadians continued their shutdown defence in the third period, holding the Germans without a shot on
goal in the frame, while Mallory Deluce (London, Ont./University of Wisconsin, WCHA) rounded out the scoring
by burying her own rebound.
Laura Hosier (Sharon, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) and Christina Kessler (Mississauga, Ont./Harvard University,
ECAC) split the goaltending duties for Canada; Hosier allowed one goal on six shots, while Kessler stopped
all four she faced.
Canada opens the 2010 MLP Cup on Tuesday when it faces Switzerland in Ravensburg (10 a.m. ET/7 a.m.
PT).
